Commercial Licence Medicals

A clear step-by-step guide for patients attending the clinic for a new or renewal commercial driver’s licence health assessment. Please read through before your appointment so you know what to bring and expect.

The Process, Step by Step
Every driver medical follows the same core pathway. It requires a double appointment to complete.

Complete the Health Assessment Form

All patients must have the first page of the Queensland Private & Commercial Vehicle Driver’s Health Assessment form (Form F3195) completed. Bring it with you, or we can provide a copy at reception.

This is the standard Transport & Main Roads medical certificate form. Page 1 captures your details and the driver declaration , it must be filled in for the assessment to proceed.

Provide a Urine Sample

On the day of your appointment you will be asked to provide a urine sample as part of the standard commercial medical screening. Please try not to empty your bladder immediately before arriving.

GP Examination & Review

Your GP will review your history, examine you, and check for conditions that require extra attention for commercial drivers , most commonly diabetes and sleep apnoea (see below). Any required specialist reviews must be up to date before sign-off.

Payment , Please Note

Because a commercial licence medical is not covered by Medicare, a fee applies for this appointment.

Certificate Issued

Once all requirements are met and any specialist reviews are current, your GP will complete and sign your commercial licence documents.

Areas That Commonly Catch People Out
These two conditions have specific Austroads requirements for commercial drivers. If they apply to you, please arrange the relevant specialist review before your appointment to avoid delays.
Diabetes

Diabetes & Commercial Driving

Under the Austroads Assessing Fitness to Drive standard, commercial drivers with diabetes treated with glucose-lowering medication must be seen by a specialist at least once since diagnosis for advice on a conditional licence.

On medication other than metformin alone (e.g. other agents or insulin): you require an annual specialist review, and this must be current before your GP can sign off the commercial documents.
On metformin only & well controlled: no ongoing specialist reviews are needed for the commercial licence , annual review is by your treating GP.

Sleep Apnoea

Sleep Apnoea & Commercial Driving

Commercial vehicle drivers diagnosed with sleep apnoea who require treatment must have an annual review by a sleep specialist to confirm treatment is adequate, as per the Austroads standard.

Minimum CPAP usage: minimally acceptable usage is generally defined as ≥ 4 hours per night on ≥ 70% of days. CPAP machines with a usage meter allow this to be objectively recorded.
